The size of the Turkey he had bought the year previously. Listening to Marie, swearing on realizing it wouldn’t fit in the oven! It had to be somewhat butchered to fit!
Whilst most might have been amused, Marie was definitely NOT! It had taken two of them to bring it to table! Reminded by his sister. "If you think we’re being stuck with the left overs, you can think again!‘
“What you got there boss." January following that event? "Turkey sandwiches!" Monday, Tuesday...aaagh! Enough! No more!
Nina was somewhat pleased that she didn’t have to make his sandwiches! Opening the refrigerator door some days later, she was relieved to see, that it was minus, any signs of Turkey! The only garden in the neighborhood, without foxes! That turkey was the best fox deterrent ever!
It was probably why, this year, he had bought a joint of beef. A little larger than he had wanted. More for four people than just one, but it had been fraction of the price of the Turkey.
Nina had put a Gammon joint, with the beef and some of his favorite sausages. Having stashed everything away. He decided to take in some fresh air.
A visit to the adjoining shed? Curious? Minutes later he was headed towards the big wooden building. Corrugated fiber roof that was still in good condition, even after fifteen years.
The solid timber framed door took some effort to open, no doubt the hinges rusted?! As he stepped in he could see to one side, wood logs piled up. The movement out of the corner of his eye of this huge spider vanishing into the shadows, somehow the spider had the right idea.. though he could recollect and smile thinking of Nina and that spider in the shower!
"You big baby!" She had laughed, removed it finally throwing it out of the window. The light bulb had gone. So had the one at the other end of the barn. Or had the power been turned off? He remembered the fuse box and the switch in the cupboard next to the back door.
Grabbing some of the logs, closing the shed door, securing it, he headed back indoors. Minutes later, power to the barn had been restored.
Mid day. The phone call to Miranda, had been of little consequence. All under control. He could take it easy and if he felt inclined, start to sort the mass of artefacts around him. Decide what he wanted to keep and maybe stick some items on Ebay?
There was the phone but no internet connection! Did he want to have broadband? On reflection, he could hold off until the new year! Ebay could wait until after Christmas, when he had had time to go through the house, list items for selling.
The trip into the local village had been rewarding. It had provided him, with all of the fruit and vegetables, plus other sundries. They would last until after Christmas into the New Year.
Some wine and brandy, plus other drinks such as Coca cola and similar soft drinks. He managed to purchase a hamper, put together for him, whilst he headed off for a haircut. Collecting it, he added a bottle of finest whiskey and a skinned rabbit.
Richard he knew liked his rabbit pie, he was not the only one! Ruth and Richard had been looking after the place whilst he had been away. Soon he was at their place unloading the hamper and wishing them a Merry Christmas, partaking of some drinks and mince pies, home made by Ruth.
Ah yes. The rabbit! "So will you grace us with your presence after Christmas?"
"These mince pies are delicious!' Ruth knowing that Terry liked to cook, he was a better cook than Nina! Smiled.
"Must give you the recipe! One from my mothers Mrs Beetons cook book. A few additional ingredients I found spiced them up a little! He left them promising to... "If I can get over after Christmas I will. Depends on the weather! Not looking good."
The snow had thickened and was sticking. If it continued like this, a lot of local folk were going to be snowed in.Arriving back he unloaded the car. Indoors he placed the items into the various cupboards, filled the kettle and put it on to boil. Time for some tea!
Ten minutes later, he had enjoyed his mug of tea and was now rinsing the mug under the tap before looking out of the kitchen window to the back garden. Overgrown. Would need to sort that out! Getting dark. Snow, ah yes, a lot more of it! Which reminded him.
The car, he had left in front of the house. The garage might be the best place to put it. The trip to the shed had reminded him that the weather was definitely getting worse?
Snow. Not just thin flakes but heavier and sticking to whatever it could, coating the landscape with it’s blanket of white. According to the radio broadcasts, if you did not need to travel, stay indoors! Roads were becoming congested, clogged up with those heading home for the holidays.
Gritting would keep most of the main roads passable. Side roads? Treacherous. Impassable. Dangerous.
Getting the garage door to open, was a feat in itself. ‘Don’t ‘ His father had told him. ‘Lever it from the left! You’ll cause the mechanism and arms, to buckle ?! Heeding his advice he carefully pulled the door upwards for it to slide up and back. Breathing a sigh of relief at seeing the garage virtually empty!
The car secured in the garage he made his way back to the house.
